Abstract

The term - pole dance consists of two items - 'pole' which means 'a thick stick' and 'dance' denoting the activity of dancing. Thus, pole dance can be so explained as dancing on a pole. Being new and only evolving discipline, it is difficult to define. Pole dance combines elements of acrobatics, gymnastics, dance, and even yoga, and is performed on a vertical gymnastic pole, creating a performance of artistic or sporting character.

The aim of the study is to present a little-known form of recreational activity that is the pole dance, showing its positive aspects against the stereotypes which are not fully compatible with the actual concept of this kind of exercise. The study examines the main motives that drive people to take up pole dance and the benefits resulting from practicing it. The survey was conducted on a group of 50 women regularly attending pole dance classes. According to the research, the main incentive encouraging people to undertake the activity of pole dance is in particular the desire to explore new forms of recreation, as well as the fact that the pole dance is a mixture of different elements - dance, acrobatics, gymnastics and fitness. The study shows a positive effect of pole dance on the physical and mental sphere of its practitioners. The activity is training of the whole body, a form of relaxation and a recovery from our everyday life.
